The Macau government singled out cultural industries as a pillar for economic diversification. Gastronomy, namely Macanese cuisine, has a role to play.
Like the Peranakan and the Kristang community, the Macanese people of Macao originated from the intermarriage between two diverse cultures — the Chinese and the Portuguese. The similarities are apparent especially when these cross-pollinated cultures are deeply influenced by Portuguese heritage.
China announced that it has included in its List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage three Macau items: Macanese Gastronomy, Patuá Theatre and Tou Tei beliefs and customs.
In order to promote and pass on Macanese gastronomy, an intangible cultural heritage item, the Cultural Affairs Bureau publishes a revised edition of “The Cuisine of Macao From My Grandfather’s House” in Chinese version and a bilingual Portuguese-English version
